Walkin’ in Memphis (Contest)
Thursday, February 17th, 2011

UPDATE! The winner of yesterday’s contest, hosted by Juniper Bell, is Stormy! Stormy, congrats, and send me an email so I can arrange delivery!

In the meantime, I promised some pictures from last weekend’s trip to Memphis. My travel buddy’s were the red-headed hellion, her new boyfriend, and the 6-year-old. We all drove up in my tiny Scion which couldn’t have been comfortable for Dex (he’s over 6 feet). We left early in the morning from my home and arrived at our first stop around noon. Graceland.

Yes, it’s cheesy. But it wasn’t for me. My daughter adores Elvis. How’d that happen? Guess it’s my fault. I’ve always had a thing for bad B movies. When she was in grade school, TBS ran an annual Elvis movie marathon on the anniversary of his death that lasted a week. It was our thing. When I’d get home from work, we’d rush through homework and dinner, then sit down with popcorn to watch Elvis. She’s been in love ever since.

And really, if you go to Memphis, there are iconic places you have to go: Graceland, Sun City Records, and Beale street. We hit two of them in our quick fly-by weekend.

Yes, this is Elvis’s Graceland mansion.

This is me in his trophy room.

But here’s where we spent most of our time—shopping and eating—Beale street. It’s pretty empty because of the cold, but that suited us just fine. The stores weren’t crowded. We hired a carriage to take us on a loop of the downtown and riverfront area. For the six-year-old. Uh-huh.

Maybe I had a little too much fun?

Anyway, I brought back a couple of gifts I bought in Tater Red’s on Beale street. This is the first prize I’ll offer up—Dead Elvis! You know you want it! I’ll be sure to add some other swag to the package!

Post a comment on my blog anytime before Sunday, and you’re entered in the drawing!

Dead Elvis is cute. But then I have a thing for skulls. It can’t be helped. Its one of those things in my DNA. Just like not every wanting to live in Texas is.

Oh and the man in the brown long sleeve shirt looks like a giant.

Delilah, I’m driving up from the Mississippi Gulf Coast closer to Christmas to show my 16yo daughter Graceland for the first time and this Dead Elvis would be a perfect accompaniment for our dashboard on the “Thelma and Louise with the Better Ending” Tennessee Tour! We’re hitting Memphis then Nashville so she can see the Parthanon and I plan to eat barbecue until we bust!

Donna! Thelma and Louise with a better ending! Too funny. Yeah, you’d need to glue Elvis to the dash.

My love for the Elvis movies is well known in my family. They are just so cheesy I can’t get enough of them. The best, in my opinion, is Kissin’ Cousins – Elvis plays two roles, one cousin with blonde hair and one with dark hair. Double the Elvis!!!!!! 😆

Sounds like a good time was had by all.

I keep trying to convince my hubs that we need to go on a road trip. Would love to see the sites like that.

My kids are 8 and 10, but I’ve already got them liking Elvis. 😉

OMG! My mom would go crazy for that! She cried when he died. I thought a relative had died the way she carried on about it. She was a teenager when Buddy Holly died, too and remembers it like it was yesterday……..

Lisa! My fave is Blue Hawaii. The scenery was gorgeous and perfectly matched his pretty eyes. 😉

Lanae! Even day trips are fun for everyone! Dd and I have some of those planned as well. We love an excuse to jump into a car and head out together.

Diane! Thanks, glad you enjoyed them.

Marika! I was driving a bunch of my high school friends home from a concert in Little Rock, when the radio announcer broke in and said, “The King is Dead! I repeat, the King is dead!” That’s all he had to say. The whole car erupted with, “Elvis! No!” Yeah, one of those moments you never forget.

My mother is an Elvis freak. She used to have every album (yes I said album) and every tshirt design you could get (remember the ones at the state fair every year in the Hall of Industry). Newspaper articles, collector plates line her walls, shall I go on.

We actually were in Memphis at Liberty land the day he died. we heard the sirens pass by. my mother actually cried all the way home.

Love his music and yes, the movies are very cheesy but he was not bad to look at.

Yeah I’m a fan. I love his music and have his Christmas albums on my computer that I listen to every year. Blue Christmas from a Year without a Santa Claus is my favorite all time christmas song and his version is by far the best. 🙂

The tour of Elvis’s house is so interesting. I thought I would be kind of bored but I really enjoyed the whole thing. Memphis is a cool city.

Jen! I loved the tour, but I think it was because little one kept me entertained. She was into listening to the speaker talk about the rooms. She was even funnier at the Rock ‘n’ Soul museum because she’s make me listen to song snippets.

I so want to visit Memphis one day. Really, a road trip to TN is in our future. As soon as I get some books written and online and people start buying them. LOL
