Tell me a story!

IMG_8426

I bought this little brainstorming tool years ago at some writers’ conference. I’ve used it only once—here! “Story Cubes” is (that looks wrong, but I promise it’s not) a brainstorming game. You roll the dice and whatever pictures appear face up are the ones you use to riff off a story.

Here’s the roll…

Do any of these symbols tell you anything? You can pick some or use all of them. Tell me a story, or just a glimmer of an idea, for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card!

Once upon a time in the land of flowers and trees, there lived a small mutt. [OK, I can’t really figure out that image on the far left cube–is it a dog in a doghouse? wearing a firefighter’s helmet? upside-down bunny? an IUD? ???] His was a sweet soul, who always longed for justice, whether for the puppy not included in playground games or for the mom-and-pop store pushed out by the building conglomerate razing the neighborhood for its megamall. While helping a neighbor clean out for a move, they stumbled across a tiny key in a back of a drawer, and after some research, determined it was to the lock on a safety deposit box… across the country. Onto a plane he went, with his trusty journal by his side to record this new adventure…

One Spring day, a woman finds an old journal… inside she reads of adventures that her grandfather had in his youth…
    A bit simple… have a headache ugh!

A young lady who had recently passed the bar to become a lawyer was sitting, reading her book while resting on the tree trunk . She stopped to look out over the meadow and saw a beetle walking on a yellow flower. Upon the tree was carved a lock and key and what appeared to be worn lover’s initials. Up in the sky a plane flying West caused her to wonder who were these lover’s and where are they now.Perhaps one day I can help people much like them.

One day Mandy decided that she needed to balance her life. Tired of finding the key to unlock other’s problems, she decided to take a vacation. She took a plane ride to a vacation resort and with book in hand found a place under a tree praying that even the bugs would leave her alone. Of course with a wildflower in hand, Jake shot towards her like an arrow, hoping that she came alone;)

The book contains a key to a hidden treasure. The lock guarding the treasure can ONLY be unlocked by the key. The treasure is found after a long plane ride across the sea, buried under a tree in an oasis in the middle of the Egyptian desert. But what an adventure they will have finding it and battling an ancient curse because justice wasn’t served in the past.

“Book” contains “key” which unlocks lock. “Plane” ride to the Egyptian (“scarab”) desert, battle involving “arrows”. Curse because the “scales” of justice were unbalanced. Treasure buried under “tree” in the oasis containing “flowers” Treasure locked with “Padlock”

Bam. There’s your story idea. Hey, that was fun!

The book held the key to administer justice to the guilty pilot. She unlocked the mystery of the Egyptian arrow buried under the tree.
