Overwhelmed much? (Contest & Puzzle)

UPDATE: The winner is…Christi A!
*~*~*

Since my mom passed, my daughter has been on a mission to declutter the house to make room for her brood to move in. Up until today, she worked on the kitchen, mom’s bedroom—places that didn’t really impact me. However, today, she decided the focus would turn on me, because, guess what? Me and my big mouth offered up my office room so that every child would have their own bedroom. So, now, I have to consolidate my art room to hold all of my office, too.

It sounded easy when I first proposed it. However, step one was consolidating mom’s upstairs art room with mine—who knew she had so many supplies! And no, I can’t part with a single usable tube of paint or square of art paper. But that was accomplished. Mom’s art room is now my dd’s Cricut and sewing room.

Then she turned to my art room because I am giving up an entire art table, a storage armoire, and a coffee/fridge station to make space for my large desk. Before we could even begin there, we had to declutter the shelving to make room for mom’s and my supplies, together. It took all damn day, but at last the armoire was emptied, the shelves decluttered and refilled, the back table cleared. Only problem will be how to move around the cluttery table in the center of the space to place my desk against the back wall.

I’m so glad she’s the one in charge because I’d still be staring at it all, not knowing where to start… As it is, we’ve used a sh*t-ton of garbage bags already.

So, I used all those words to tell you why I chose my theme for today’s puzzle! Have fun solving it!

For a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card, give me one good office/desk/files decluttering tip!

a decluttering tip?? I wish I had some… the best thing I’ve done in my office is use those big plastic tubs from Target to group my ‘swag’ stuff together… i’m so used to just ‘putting it somewhere safe’ HAR HAR

I’d love to have a couple of those four-tiered rolling drawer bins for all of my crafting things. Sigh, just no room! So boxes & baskets instead.

I’m terrible at decluttering, though I had to do the same thing with my aunt’s house two summers ago (eventually, between me clearing out the attic and her office and basement, we filled 3 dumpsters and made a couple more trips to the dump ourselves).

For cleaning out my office paper (I have 3 filing cabinets in my office), my thing is if I have saved something ‘for future reference’, and haven’t looked at it in a few years, I’m never going to use it. lol I have plans to do that in my own office this year. I’m overdue. 😉 Good luck!

Bins are useful, but then again my desk is a huge mess… I need to try to clean out a room or two soon… things just keep building up.

It took me 6:12 but I had a lot of distractions.

When I decluttered my dad’s stuff I started with files of what I knew I had to keep. That way I was able to get rid of papers first. It made it so much easier to look at the stuff that has emotions attached to it.

I’ve also used the big plastic tubs and they seem to help. However, my new guideline is, if I haven’t used it in the last 6 months to a year, it’s in the trash bag.

Declutter tip – Every room but the office is fairly clutter free. The office – has it’s moments. I do try. I have gotten good at what I call purging – throwing out stuff I haven’t used in forever or don’t love anymore. But, well, this room also doubles as the library. Although I am better at it thanks to ereaders, I still have a difficult time parting with some books. Like my Dad’s favorite book of poetry, or Mom’s Nancy Drew. *sigh* So I still have clutter cuz all the bookcases are full with more books stacked in front. The desk, I have a wonderful organizer I got years ago with lovely places for note books and stuff. It has moved with me for years.

I’m a clear bin and sharpie kind of person. Time to de clutter and it goes into bins that are labeled. From there it gets filed where it belongs. I can snap on top and can come back to it later if need be. I have 3 big bins of must keep folders (tax, bills etc), stupid stuff (recipes, articles) and a later box. The stupid stuff and later I can sit and do while watching a movie and I always put a bag of my favorite candy in the bottom to reward myself when done. Hey, whatever works!!

When we moved we were taking 3 households and putting into 1. We through away tons of stuff and then donated the rest. We took 9-10 trips to the donation center trucks and trailers, we had tons of stuff to throw away. After 3 years we are accumulating stuff again.

5:45 for me–and I knew what the final pic would look like. I like the idea of taking a before and after pic, or in progress pics, because looking at the mess today, I think I haven’t accomplished anything, but 86 trash bags say otherwise…

🙂 Love your puzzles! Before I begin work each day, I file any papers that need to be filed, and update my ‘to do’ list to keep focus on my daily goals.

Sandra! I bought two 2-tier storage bins on wheels and slid them under my remaining art table. Great suggestion!

Colleen, bins are great. I already had a shit-ton in my office, but most of them were only partly filled, so I consolidated to save space.

Ani! I’ll use the photograph idea when we move my bookcases. I’d hate to start all over organzing those! And I have to go from 3 to 2. What to discard/giveaway? Argh

Shirley, I can’t use the 6 ms. rule! If I haven’t used my art Gelli plates in 6 mos. I’ll need them at month 10 for a month, and those things are darn expensive to replace!

Pansy, you have your mom’s Nancy Drews? I’m jealous!

    Confused…you are so…confused. LOL

Michelle, I will be “bin-ning” my paperwork so I can address it later, for sure!

Delaine! Yes, we’ve already made several trips to the donation center and to the dump! More to come!

And for those of you who are master declutterers, I bow to you! 🙂
