Grace O’Malley, the Irish Pirate Queen (Gráinne O’Malley) lived in the late 1500’s. She was head of Clan O’Malley, and even petitioned the Queen of England (Elizabeth I) for the release of her two sons and half brother, where she and Queen Elizabeth spoke in Latin.
When she was a girl, she wanted to accompany her father to Spain on a trading expedition. This was refused because of her long hair – so she cut it off.
She led an attack against the men who killed her lover. Her attack was successful.
She was often at sea, where her ships were said to “behave like pirates.”
We should all have a little bit of Grace O’Malley in us.
(There’s now a really good Irish Whiskey named after her.)

When I was working on some family genealogy, I found out about several Great+++… Grandfathers who were sea captains – one who lived in the 1500’s was killed by Japanese pirates! When I have “time” I want to find out more.

My first reaction was the Navy. Something about the Navy is so awesome.

What an interesting question. I had to give it some thought. Until I read some of the other comments, I hadn’t even thought of fictional characters. I went with Jacque Cousteau. I used to enjoy his documentaries. But if we are going with fictional, Loved Sea Quest SUV! The original movie was fun too. And of course there is the classic 20,000 Leagues under the Sea with Dr. Nemo. I also like Jennifer Beyer’s answer. The Navy. I have some real live heroes there.
