I bought this little brainstorming tool years ago at some writers’ conference. “Story Cubes” is a brainstorming game. You roll the dice and whatever pictures appear face-up are the ones you use to riff off a story.
Now, I’d like you to tell me a story based on what you see on the cubes. Do any of these symbols tell you anything? You can pick some of the images or use all of them. Comment for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card!
Have fun with this! Don’t overthink! Here’s the roll…

One evening when unlocking my door I saw an arrow on the wall pointing to the sheep in the field. I checked the time but the moon wasn’t bright enough so I grabbed my flashlight. By the time I got to the field the sun had already come up and a beautiful rainbow was in the sky that was when I saw a little bug near the fountain.
The End. 😁

4 am and something woke me up… so dark outside with only a small crescent moon visible… I take my flashlight to go and look around. I find nothing but a few bugs and hear the splashing of the water fountain… guess I will try to go back to sleep… count some sheep.

Ben El-Da-Vid’s lifelong dream was about to come true. As a child he dreamt of locating a lost Egyptian tomb. He learned to read the hieroglyphics and studied the ancient sheepskin texts, learning the story of a lost tomb deep in the Valley of the Crescent Moon. Unfortunately, no one knew of it’s location. There was nothing on maps, yet he felt it in his bones that the tomb existed. Armed with notes, he hired a helicopter pilot and together they flew above the valleys surrounding the Nile. Far below Memphis, he saw the first sign: an arrow that was formed on the top of the nearby mountains. To the west of the arrow, they spotted a narrow off-chute from the Valley that formed a perfect crescent. There they saw the second sign: a discoloration on the cliff wall meaning the fountain was close. They left the Valley with plans to return the next day with supplies.
At 4:00AM, before the sunrise, Ben was ready to explore. As the sun rose, the light spilled slowly into the valley. Near the fountain, the splashing water formed a rainbow. Where it touched the cliff wall, he spotted the opening. Just as the texts prophesized it was in the shape of a keyhole. Armed with a flashlight and extra batteries, he shimmied into the opening. Watching for boobytraps, Ben followed the tunnel to the burial chamber. There, sitting on a rock altar, was the sarcophagus of the lost Pharaoh adorned with the sacred scarabs. He had done it! He found the lost tomb.

I was watching a crescent moon when I noticed a sheep running. It looked like it was covered in bugs. I pulled out my flashlight and discovered it was not bugs but key holes. I looked in the keyhole and found myself pulled through. It was a nice area with a fountain and a rainbow. I looked at the clock nearby which had an arrow underneath so I said what the heck and off I went.

I couldn’t believe the sheep were at it again. Dancing in the fountain by flashlight at midnight? What were the neighbors going to think??

She shined the flashlight into the keyhole to see what was in the room. None of it made any sense! What she found wasn’t a room but a fantastical world with sheep dancing around a fountain under a bright moon that was making a rainbow in the water of the fountain! Just as she decided that she needed to find a way to open the door a scarab walked up to the door holding a clock with the hands pointing to 7 am. And then her alarm went off.

I could see the moon through the keyhole. I checked the clock and saw it was our agreed meeting time. I grabbed my flashlight and went out to meet Sam at the fountain.
