UPDATE: The winner is…Pansy Petal!
*~*~*
I’m one of those people who doesn’t understand depression. I’m sure I’ve felt it. Perhaps after the one time I was fired from a job. Maybe when I was diagnosed for Graves disease and had my thyroid fried with a radioactive pill, then spent a month in bed so I wouldn’t have a heart attack. Talk about fatigue. Lordy.
However, both times, I gave myself a day to feel some self-pity then I sat in front of my PC or pulled my Alphasmart out of my bag, lay it across my lap in bed, and typed for just a minute at a time. When I was in bed for that month, I literally could only write in very short spurts then I’d crash. But I wasn’t depressed. I pushed forward.
Maybe it’s a physiological thing? Maybe it’s brain chemistry? I don’t know, but I am a naturally happy person. If I feel a little “flat”—I sit outside and watch the deer at the pond. Or, I pull out pictures of things that make me happy.
Or, I pull out the paint like I did last night…

I’ve had brief issues with depression over the years, but not much. My sister and my son have both required meds.
Happy.. yes. My grandson, scuba diving, and traveling with my husband all make me happy!

How very lucky you are. I have fought depression a good portion of my life. Like you I don’t know what the cause is, but it is there. I turn to books. They make me happy. I am always in a book. Whether a physical book, e-book or an e-book, I usually have at least one going. Often I have an audio reading to me while I crochet. That is the best. Not only am I escaping into a world of adventure, but I am creating something useful to donate to someone who has greater need than I. That too makes me happy. I could go on, and on, and on, and on. As mentioned, I have been fighting this war a very long time. I have learned many tools, activities to set the mood for the day and NOT wallow in depression. So I will leave it at this.

I think what makes me the most happy on the cosmic level is allowing myself to accept the fact it is ok not to get something finished or my doing nothing. I am almost 70 and still have trouble enjoying down time–time that is no longer work related. If I want to work on my wire guys, I can. If I want to play on my computer I can. I am trying to learn to accept this leisure status.
