UPDATE: The winner is…Charlene Whitehouse!
*~*~*
Yes, it’s another weird holiday! And such a fun one!
First, raise your hands! How many people here own a sewing machine? Do you own more than one?
We have…three?…in the house. One I purchased. One my daughter brought when she moved in. Another I inherited or was given. It’s been so many years, I don’t remember!
Now, tell me, when was the last time you used yours?
I used mine last when my dd challenged me to make some handkerchiefs for men. We had an idea we would make them using material with superhero patterns then give them away to the cops my SIL works with. We made two. If you can imagine it, we had to look up a YouTube video to remember how to thread the machine! It’s sad because I made clothes with mine back in the day.
So, why do people celebrate the sewing machine? It was an agent of change. No longer did women have to spend long hours to make their family’s clothing or mend their husband’s sleeves. They had an efficient way to take care of that task, which gave them more leisure time—to do what? Maybe dream of doing things outside the home… Yes, a sewing machine can be considered an agent of women’s empowerment! Do you see my Rosie the Riveter arm flex?
It’s Friday. It’s a holiday. Now, I’ll have to figure out how to celebrate. No, I’m not pulling a sewing machine out of a closet. 🙂
Answer the questions I posed above for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card!

What a wonderful holiday. My sewing machine is just over there on the other desk. I need to use it today to replace an elastic I need to replace in the skirt I need to wear tomorrow. These days, I only have one machine. It once belonged to my mother. An old singer that is a true work horse. I had a rather expense machine I used to quilt with, but the the computer went kaput! I sold my serger to last year to a young woman who was just learning the art. So yes, sewing machines are still being used by the younger generation. I don’t know how much “free” time it has given me over the years, but it’s the only way I got clothes that fit well. My kids had award winning Halloween costumes. My daughter still wants me to make costumes for her. I have tried to convince her she need to make her own. But then, what would I do. Just another craft I do love to do.

Alas, no longer. I got my first Singer when I was in junior high school. Back then Singer gave lessons on how to use their machines.

I own 3 sewing machines. I make a lot of Quilts with them.

I haven’t used a sewing machine since I was in my early twenties. Long time.

I do own a sewing machine. I haven’t used it in over 25 years though. It’s in a wooden sewing machine cabinet my Dad found way back & installed it in there. It was a surprise gift for me way back but I’ve never really been a sewer. My Mom was & made me all kinds of clothes when I was in school. She even made my wedding dress & veil. I just never took to it like she did. I made a lot of pregnancy clothes when I was expecting my first daughter but after that….basically I used it to hem some things or quick seam repairs.

I have 3 sewing machines and a ‘sewing’ room. I use my machines all the time. I’m a quilter and I make baby quilts that I donate to the Portsmouth VA Naval Hospital for young service members struggling to afford their newborns! I also make costumes for my grandson and mend or tailor clothes as needed.

Two sewing machines in the house (one is sewing/embroidery and is my daughter’s), and one vintage one in storage waiting to be fixed. I think I used it a few months ago to make dolls, then I had to relinquish the space and I’ve been sewing by hand. But I have plans for the summer!

Hi Delilah
It must be 5 years since I pulled out my heavy Sears Kenmore sewing machine.
I was only mending a hem on pants instead of all the clothes I used create for myself in the 1970’s.
We now only have the one machine, but I had inherited an old portable singer that I gave away to another family member.
I felt satisfaction when creating clothes for myself & family in the past.

I have 2 sewing machines. One was gifted to me and the other I inherited. I use them to make repairs on my clothing or for my mom. Sometimes I even make curtains. It is fun to create.

Yes I have a sewing machine – my parents bought it for me when I was in Jr High and took Home Ec. I mostly use it for mending these days – last was when I washed and mended all my Barbie’s cloths for one of my great-nieces. I also have one of my grandmothers old pedal sewing machines, but have never used it.

I don’t have a sewing machine. My mom had one while we were growing up, but she didn’t use it much. I’ve never really tried sewing.

My mom has an old one that is folded into a table…. I usually only do hand repairs, never a whole project for a machine.

I have 3 sewing machines, all purchased second hand, including a portable Pfaff, a Bernina with table and a Singer with table and storage chair. They cost me less than $100 for all three. They each have different functions and uses. I used to have a treadle machine but sold it when we moved 30 years ago. I use them for home projects, mending and making clothing. I last used them last month.

I have 2 sewing machines. Both were my mothers. The original one was a treddle in its own cabinet. The other was an electric one I bought her. She never used it, thought she did sew a couple of scrap cloths together to try it. I never used it. Last time I used an electric machine was in jr high school 66-68. The first class I broke the needle trying to thread it. It was downhill after that, though I did sew the required pieces for the grade. Still have no idea how the skirt shrunk 4 or 5 sizes as I was putting it together. As for the last time I sewed on it? Let’s see. My mom died 15 years ago so I would guess 20 years ago. Here’s the problem. I really have some things I need to sew, but I think the leather “chain” or driving belt may be dry rotted or stretched. She knew all that and what to do. Not even sure I could find a replacement of not and if I did, not sure I could fit it.

don’t have one

I don’t own one, but borrowed my sister’s the last time I needed one. I think my mom might still have one also, a Singer… I’m not too good at it, LOL!

I own three machines. I have sewn all my life and in retirement have become a quilter. Of the three I have I love and use my Singer featherweight the most.

I have one – it’s in my storage unit because it’s an older Singer console that belonged to my aunt. When she passed away, the family asked if I wanted it. I haven’t sewn since the 8th grade! But I took it after asking a friend to teach me a bit, which she agreed to. But life has changed so much since then that at this point I’ll never use it now. So it’s hopefully going back to my aunt’s daughter-in-law who will use it.

I have a machine that I love. I loaned it to my daughter for a while and just got it back so I haven’t used it in a while. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to use it soon.
