We have several trees around our house. It seems we “grow” more trees, large and mostly small, every year. Many of the ornaments are ones we’ve inherited or collected over the years. Some are handmade by the children. All hold memories.

The angel wings that I got the first Christmas after we lost my Dad and the crystal angels that are the colors of the entire family’s birthstone. They have to be on my tree. We have many and I kinda change it up every year but those have to be on the tree strategically placed where a Christmas light shines through so you can see them sparkle no matter where you sit in the room. It’s like there light shines on us everywhere. That’s what family is to me, my light sometimes the only light when the world gets dark.

I cherish one ornament that I received from my husband the first year we were married. It’s a hollowed out glass ball with two cardinals in the middle cuddling together.

I don’t really have a favorite ornament. Most of mine, are 70+ years old. Many have been added over the years and I have a lot of the original Hallmark ST ornaments. There is 1 ornament I put on the tree every year. It shows its age and was often hidden in the back, but I kept moving it to the front. It is a mirror ball. It is old, battered and missing some mini tiles, but I was always mesmerized by the reflection of the flickering lights.
The last time I put up that tree was 16 years ago. My mom was sick. When she passed in May of 2009, I lost the joy of decorating. She and my dad (gone in 97) loved just sitting watching the lights with a cup of coffee. It made no sense to me after that to make 3 trips to the cellar, twice, and moving furniture just to put it up when I worked full time with OT 25 mile away with a 1.5 hour commute twice a day. There was no one to enjoy it. And now I go to my sisters. But who knows, maybe next year.

I do have a pickle on my tree, but my daughter stole it. Now I enjoy it on her tree. Every year my grandsons pick out an ornament and I add them to my tree and when they grow up, they get them back.

My favorite was a white ceramic nativity which broke unfortunately when we moved. I can’t display it but I keep it stored in a velvet ornament bag and take it out look at it every Christmas

While any that the kids made for us are special and the Baby’s first Christmas ones are very important, the most precious one I own is the one for my husband’s first son. He was born on Dec. 10 (that’s why my husband always tried to put the tree up on that date) but only lived for about three weeks before SIDS happened. And even though my husband has passed years ago, I make sure that that ornament is safe and that the story is passed to our daughter so that even though she never knew her brother she at least knows of him, and why the ornament has special meaning when it eventually passes to her.
