Word Search: First Signs of Spring (Contest)
Thursday, March 6th, 2025

The official start of spring is the 20th, but here in Central Arkansas, we already have signs of the changing seasons.

Yesterday, I noted that the forsythia and japonica bushes have started to bloom. We’ve had rain and tornadic activity around the state. Another sure sign. We’ve already had some mild flooding around the state. The temperature is still cool here, but we have forecasts for the upper 70s in our 10-day forecast. I expect budding trees to begin to show some blooms. We have redbuds and dogwoods in the forest around us. There’s been an increase in deer sightings, and I’m waiting to see the first fawns emerge.

For a chance to win a download of your choice from among my over 200 stories, tell me what the first signs of spring are for your area—and when you expect them to happen! Enjoy the puzzle!

Pollen. Making all vehicles regardless of color look an ugly shade of yellow! Carpenter bees have appeared as well and time goes back an hour this weekend.

Ah Spring! That illusive time of year that Michiganders are continually teased with. Like yesterday, rained all day. The white stuff disappeared like magic. The ground is saturated. Temps playing in the 40s. All signs of spring. However, in the late afternoon, temp drops, wind picks up and white stuff falls from the sky. It is winter again, just like that! Grrrr. But, I will be looking for daffodils. The forsythia along my front porch to bud. And for me, the biggest clue Spring may actually be on it’s way? Robins! When I hear their raucous song and/or see one or more looking for worms in all that mud, Spring is here! I am watching!

For me, the best and first sign of spring is finding onion sets in my local grocery store. You can be wearing your winter coat with snow tracking from your boots, but seeing the onion sets waiting to jump in the dirt… well, you just know there is hope that spring is on the way. To counter that, even if temps are in the 50s and 60s, there will be one last snowfall–however small–before you plant them. Ask any old farmer. You just gotta be patient and wait for the onion snow to pass. Then spring is here.

In Virginia, it is the emergence of the daffodils. Seems like they spring up overnight!
