Claire Davon: Fire Danger (Contest)
Sunday, June 12th, 2016

Hi all and welcome to my blog takeover. Many thanks to Delilah Devlin for allowing me and my characters to invade her website.

My name is Claire Davon and I love to write romance, primarily paranormal and contemporary. Starting from a young age I always loved to read the happy ending romances, which in my day were the short Harlequin novels. There was a store at the end of my trolley line in Brookline, Massachusetts that used to stock the slim 180 page Harlequins on a carousel outside for 25 cents a book. I read lord knows how many before I discovered the saucier versions in Rosemary Rogers and the like. I wrote for a lot of years before giving up after being shot down by Harlequin (and I thought it would be so easy) and putting away my pen for a time.

Fast forward several years to more recent years when my stories simply wouldn’t let me alone and I went back to writing. I am proud to say that on June 21st my paranormal romance novel Fire Danger, the first in the Elementals’ Challenge series, is being released by Samhain Publishing. This novel is truly a labor of love. It started ten years ago when I had this idea about four immortal Elementals who were once human trying to save the world. It evolved to what it is today with the basic premise intact. This is the first of five books with each book having a happily ever after. What is romance without that promise of bliss (with a whole lot of spice)? These Elementals have unique powers specific to their station and have to save the world one Challenge at a time, all while facing the most baffling mystery of all—the opposite sex!

cdFire Danger Samhain Cover

All her life, a faint memory of her parents and fire has glowed at the back of Rachel Quinn’s mind. With her parents long dead, there is no one to clarify what it means.

When a gorgeous winged man rescues her from a pack of werewolves, something flares to life inside Rachel. Suddenly she can see the paranormal world around her, a world unseen by mortals. And far more complicated.

Here is an excerpt:

“You’re not serious. Elementals are supposed to save the world.”

Phoenix squared his shoulders and shook his head. His mind was blocked from her, and she had no idea what he was thinking.

“It’s unimportant. What is important is finding out the truth about you.”

The stiffness of his body told her this was not the time to pursue this line of questioning. Unsure whether she should believe him, Rachel filed the comment away for future attention. Then the memory of the car accident drew her back. “Why don’t I remember? Why don’t I know?”

He turned to look at her and his big body almost filled the window, blocking the view.

“Why don’t I have wings if I’m what I saw in that vision? Why don’t I have more…power?” Her body heated again, and part of her wanted to be that winged  creature with the power of fire at her command. She yearned for it, like it was a part of her she hadn’t known was missing until this moment.

Phoenix shrugged, his shoulders flexing. “There was something there, interfering, maybe protecting. I’m not sure. As to your wings, not all Ifrit have them.”

“Shouldn’t I look more…different?”

Another shrug.

Heat warmed her face as her temper started to fray. The visions Phoenix had teased from her mind made her feel off-balance, like a wobbling top. She dashed across the room to him, her face heating with anger. “I am so confused.”

Rachel did the only thing she could think of. She kissed him.

Phoenix reacted, his arms immediately closing around her. His tongue sought hers, probing, demanding a response, which she gave, meeting his desire with a hot, burning need of her own. It flared like fire between them, passion that came to life instantly.

He broke off the kiss only to nibble on her ear. His breath was warm, and she shuddered with wanting him. She had to have him. She was projecting desire and she didn’t care.

He chuckled. “Come, Rachel. I want you so much. This Phoenix is hungry.” His hips thrust against hers, leaving her no doubt of his fierce arousal.

“Yes. Now. Now.”

“Hungry Ifrit too.” His laugh was fierce and possessive, tinged with hunger. Phoenix lifted her and kissed her. His lips moved over hers until she let out a breath and opened her lips to his.

With Phoenix she was a queen. All the pent-up passion inside her could finally be expressed without fear. But her desire, her needs, were so intense she thought maybe even an immortal Phoenix couldn’t deal with it.

“I can deal with it, Rachel. Give me everything. I need all you have. I have to have it,” he said on a fervent whisper.

“Aleric.” She leaned against him. “What I feel, it scares me.”

He gathered her body into his arms, pulling her legs around his waist, and started kissing her neck. “It should scare you. I should scare you.”

As a change of pace, I have a sweet fantasy novella that draws from the Elementals world but with characters completely outside of the four main characters in that story arc. This story focuses on a Spanish water woman and the African two-horned mythical beast who needs her help. The story, titled Water Woman was included in Roane Publishing’s “Masked Hearts” anthology released on May 21st, 2016.

Here is an excerpt:

maskedWalking to the front door, she opened it. Concentrating, Isidora bade the lock on the outside gate to release and swing open. When it did so the intruders plunged through, their unshaved faces split with smiles at this unexpected piece of good luck.

Their delight turned to frowns when they saw the woman standing in the doorway. She knew she was not imposing to the untrained eye. All Alojas were small women. Their power did not come from height or strength of their human bodies. It came from within and from the ability to command water.

Hoping that Kimoni had stayed behind to protect his grandfather, Isidora smiled at her intruders.

“Looking for me, tontos?

The men looked at each other. They appeared to be common street thugs, hired to find a brute force way into her place. Her opponent had underestimated her.

“You are Isidora Marin?” the bigger one asked, moving toward her. Isidora smiled thinly and nodded.

“You have been sent on a fool’s errand,” she said. “Turn around and leave now and no harm will come to you.” Yet. Nobody could try to break into her home and not pay a price. That would come later. Let them think they could walk away now.

The other man grinned, his smile missing a tooth. Poor souls had no idea what they were getting into.

“Come with us and no harm will come to you, bruja,” he countered.

Witch. Well, they knew who she was. That made them twice the fools to come here.

“Why are you here?” she asked. “What do you want of me?”

The bigger man shrugged. “We weren’t paid to ask questions. Just to get in. Come with us and we get a bonus.”

In the distance she heard pounding hooves. They were loud in the quiet early morning of the new day. At this hour the only thing stirring were night creatures, criminals and Kimoni. She could handle these men but her senses stirred at the idea that he was galloping to her rescue. Were the other men following him? She was sure of it. She hoped they did not find his grandfather but it was too late to worry about these things. He was coming. No other horse would be on the street now.

Kimoni, mane flying and eyes wild, plunged through the open door and pivoted to a halt, his hindquarters spinning as he stopped between her and the would-be thieves. Flanks heaving, he snorted, his body across the path of the others. He pawed at the ground with one hoof and lowered his smaller nose horn to the men.

UPDATE: The winner is…Gayle Lazur!

* * * * *

I recently received rights back for some novelettes (stories around 10,000 words) that I never thought would see the light of day again. Four of the them. Now, I just have to find time to revise them and get them ready for re-release. Whee! These are the old titles, not sure if I want to re-title them. What do you think?

  • Close Encounters of the Carnal Kind (sci-fi)
  • Making the Madam (historical)
  • Her Lance-A-Lot (historical)
  • Raptor’s Prey (sci-fi)

So, more to cram into my already tight work schedule. Yesterday, I finished up a novella entitled Baby, It’s You, the next story in my Uncharted SEALs series. Next up is Before You Kiss Me. I have to start that one like last week, but don’t have a clue what it will be about. I do have a title though… Yeah, nothing coming to me yet…

And I have to start my next Stepbrothers Stepping Out short story, “With His Pack”. I know where that one starts—her awakening in human skin on all fours, in the middle of the pack’s single males. How awkward, right? 🙂 Now, I just have to figure out the rest of the story.

Oh, and among all the writing and revision, I have a month-long bootcamp to teach. And it’s summer, so the pool beckons. Maybe I can do my brainstorming while I float in the pool, huh?

I woke up this morning when my alarm went off with a horrendous headache. (Yes, I still set alarms. I have to treat this job like a real job!) I took ibuprofen and went back to sleep for an hour. Headache’s receded, but still there. Must drink lots of water today, because I’ll bet yesterday I didn’t…

But I’m rambling.

Let’s do a contest. Prize will be a small Amazon gift card!

Tell me what you think about these upcoming covers.

Elle James aka Myla Jackson: Bellissimo! (Contest)
Wednesday, June 8th, 2016

Just got back from a 2-week trip to Italy, France & Switzerland. It was freakin’ fantastic! We didn’t spend any time in Rome this visit. Instead, we drove the rental car north and visited the ancient hilltop town of Orvieto. Narrow streets, lovely cathedral, amazing views of the Italian countryside.

The next day we drove north to Florence to see the statue of David and the Duomo. Lovely sites, lots of status, amazing artwork hundreds of years old.

ej1IMG_3408

Then we swung west to Pisa, where my husband climbed the leaning tower while I sipped wine and watched. Been there, done that last time.

ej2IMG_3428

From Pisa, we headed west to the Italian Riviera town of Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre district. We took a boat tour of the 5 towns in the district and explored Montorossa. Loved the views. They were to die for!

ej3IMG_3457

From there, we headed to Milan and toured the church in the center of the city and stayed a night before catching the train to Geneva where we attended an airshow, where wealthy people toured lavish planes and bought them!

ej6IMG_3195

Our last day, we visited the town of Montreux on Lake Geneva where Chillon Castle is perched on the edge of the lake with the Alps in the background. Lord Byron wrote about the Prisoner of Chillon. We walked through that prison! It was amazing. The entire trip was bellissimo!

ej4IMG_3795

And now that I’m back, I get to celebrate the release of JUSTICE BURNING, book #2 in the Hellfire Series. Like cowboys? Like lawmen? Toss in a runaway bride and you might just get chemistry!

Her Next Breath

HerNextBreathNew_600

Ex-SEAL Jackson Keller’s first mission with the Charter Group’s spec ops unit is a bust. Instead of capturing a drug lord in his Mexican compound, he finds a beautiful, naked woman. But she may have information they need to nail the narco-terrorist, so he takes her, sealing his fate. She’s his to watch, his to “manage” until the op’s done.

Suri McAnally’s made some mistakes—mainly trusting her college roomie who just so happens to be the son of one of Mexico’s most dangerous drug lords. If Jackson can save her, she’ll do whatever he says, mirror his moves, and try to keep her insta-lust under control. Her next breath depends on it.

Buy at Amazon!

When Suri awoke, it was to discover she was resting inside the curve of Jackson’s arm, her thigh draped over his, her head on his chest. She didn’t know who’d moved the blanket. Maybe they’d both naturally gravitated together. She hated to think she might have been the one to cross the line demarking their personal space.

Partly because she didn’t want to wake him, and partly because it was a new experience lying inside a man’s embrace, she held her breath and remained perfectly still. She breathed in his scent, which was a sagey musk combined with the remaining odor of the paint he’d worn on his face. His skin was smooth, warm, tanned and cloaked a hard, very muscular frame. Her fingertips tingled, and she very nearly gave into the temptation to run one tip over his hard abs. Instead, she curled her hand into a fist.

Last night when she’d seen him fully for the first time—without the paint, his body nearly nude—she’d felt her knees wobble. He was devastatingly handsome, not in a pretty-boy way. He was too manly, too large, all hard angles and lovely bulges, with short, nearly dark-brown hair and those cloudy gray eyes. Even the stubble on his chin made her thighs clench.

Suri hoped she didn’t sleep beside him for many more nights or she’d grow accustomed to his physique. Any man she met after this little adventure would pale in comparison.

Her glance traveled downward to the sheet barely covering his hips. Maybe it was the fold of the sheets, but the fabric was tented.

“Playing possum?”

She raised her head and met his gaze, blushing because she’d been caught staring at his sex.

“Didn’t want to disturb you.”

“You’re breathing, aren’t you?” he muttered in a graveled tone.

She frowned, not understanding, and then pushed away from his body although she instantly regretted the loss of his warmth. When she’d first awoken, she’d felt sheltered, safe—and not just from Diego and his henchmen. She’d felt…cherished.

Ridiculous, she knew. And slightly pathetic. Was she really so needy for human connection that she was romanticizing over Jackson?

But in the morning light, his face wasn’t quite so hard-bitten. Scruffy, dark bristles covered his chin and jaw; his gaze rested on her rather than spearing her.

His glance cut away, and he looked at his watch. “Chow’s nearly over. We should dress.”

“I’m starved.”

The corners of his mouth twitched.

His first smile?

And then his features grew remote again, his mouth firmed. “Get dressed. I need to check in with Teague.”

Aware his gaze followed her still, she rose and stretched her arms high, and then headed to her pillow case.

“You do that on purpose, don’t you?”

She aimed a grin over her shoulder. “Why, whatever do you mean?”

His gaze narrowed, but a one-sided smile curved.

Feeling as though she’d accomplished something noteworthy, she entered the bathroom, closing the door against the temptation that was Jackson Keller.

Summer has officially started for the Devlin family! School let out yesterday. We’re overrun with kids. The pool is finally warm enough to truly enjoy (and the lime green algae is gone!). Now’s the time I have to establish rules about when I can be interrupted… Yeah, not going to happen, but I have soooo many projects I’m working on, I may just go nuts. But it’s a happy problem to have. I’ll be trying to come up with “projects” to keep them all from being bored. Of course, there will be crafting going on—painting rocks, beading bracelets, painting masterpieces for the fridge and wall (hopefully not painted on the walls)… If you have ideas for things to do, please pass those suggestions along!

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know that the last of the Planet Desire trilogy is out! Planet Desire finds the pirates finally living in paradise. I hope you enjoy it!

Anna James: Creating the “Meet Cute” (Contest)
Friday, May 27th, 2016

Hi Folks,

My name is Anna James and I write contemporary romance and romantic suspense with strong heroes and heroines that conquer life’s trials and find their happy ever afters.

I’d like to thank Delilah for having me here.

I’m here today to talk about creating the “Meet Cute”. What’s the “Meet Cute”, you ask? It’s that pivotal scene where your characters meet for the first time. In a reunion romance it’s the scene where your characters come face-to-face again.

I love reading reunion romances as well as writing them. There’s something about getting a second chance at love that really gets to me, but crafting that “Meet Cute” for a reunion romance can be tricky. The characters already know one another. They could be friends, or enemies or somewhere in between. So, what crazy circumstances can bring them together in a memorable way?

In many reunion romances the hero and heroine were a couple at one time, but things didn’t work out.

This is the case with my novel THE BUSINESS OF LOVE – Book 1 Forevermore Series. I wanted a different twist for book 2. I wondered what would happen if one character couldn’t remember meeting the other. And voila, CHASING MEMORIES – Forevermore Series (book 2), came to life.

Here’s an excerpt from the story:

Lucas opened the door to the conference room and stepped in. Piercing blue eyes gazed up at him. His heart raced, pulse soared and the breath stuck in his throat. Shit. He knew India Leone, and not from pulling her from Grams’ car before it toppled over the embankment. No, they’d met in person. A couple of months ago, at an investment seminar in Los Angeles.

Tall, goddess-like, her voluptuous body and raven black hair had sparked his interest from the moment he’d set eyes on her.

She’d joined him for coffee after the seminar and they’d talked long into the evening, discussing the best restaurants to dine in, they both loved a little eatery on East Second Street in Los Angeles. Favorite places to visit, she loved Rome and he preferred Rio. Movies they found entertaining. She loved spy thrillers, which had surprised him as he’d figured her for one of those saccharine sweet chick flick types.

Not his typical first date scenario. He’d have chosen dinner in a quiet, intimate restaurant, not drinking an espresso in a coffee shop. Still, he’d enjoyed the evening. Enjoyed spending time with her. More than he’d thought possible.

He hadn’t made the connection until now, why would he? The woman he’d met in Los Angeles had been named Dee. Maybe it was short for India? Regardless, the beauty he remembered had glorious, long, silky locks that cascaded over soft, alabaster skin, blue eyes that gleamed like sparkling sapphires and a smile that could light up a gloomy day. Not short, wavy curls or a bruised, swollen face filled with cuts and angry scratches.

India stood and extended her hand to Lucas. “Hello, Mr. Walker. It’s nice to meet you.”

Mr. Walker? She thought he was Brett?

“I want to thank you for considering me for this position.”

Not a hint of recognition. Did she not remember him, or was this all part of a charade? “Lucas Morgan.” He shook her hand. Guileless eyes stared up at him.

Excerpt:

“Is everything all right? I heard—”

Sophia froze. That voice. Dear Lord, no. It couldn’t be.

“—the security alarm go off,” the newcomer finished tersely.

Her heart started to pound. Please don’t be him, please don’t be him. Slowly, stiffly, she turned around and faced the man who’d just entered and yes, Dante Leone stood in her kitchen, large as life. Her knees threatened to buckle. No! She wouldn’t fall apart just because he was here. She straightened her shoulders and lifted up to her full height.

So, he hadn’t been a figment of her imagination after all. She’d caught a glimpse of him at the church, but then he disappeared. When he didn’t show up at the cemetery or after the burial, with the other guests, she’d convinced herself he hadn’t really been there at all. Boy, had she been wrong.

Even from across the room, he was an imposing figure. At well over six feet he towered over her dressed in black trousers that fit his lean, narrow hips to perfection. His broad, muscled chest filled out a crisp white dress shirt and black suit jacket. His hair was shorter now than it had been when they’d last met. It suited him. The new style accentuated his high cheekbones and sharply chiseled jaw.

Lord, he was even more handsome than she remembered and, Jeez Louise, how pathetic could she be?

The man used and humiliated you, her brain screamed.

Yet there she stood, lamenting over his good looks and, my goodness, let’s not forget those gorgeous sapphire blue eyes and…

There you go again, her brain condemned scathingly.

What was he doing here? Okay, that was a silly question. Dante was second in command of Baker, her father’s financial investment company. It made sense he’d attend his funeral. But goodness, she wasn’t prepared to see him again. It had been six years since he’d burst into her life and then stormed out just as quickly, leaving her to cope with the damage and destruction left in his wake.

“Dante?” Was the croaking sound really her voice?

Trey gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze and she was grateful for his presence. He’d been there to witness the devastation that had followed their breakup. His friendship, like always, had been a lifeline.

“We’ve got everything under control,” Trey said curtly.

“I can see that,” Dante retorted. “Sophia, when you have a moment I’d like to speak with you.”

“This is not the time or the place,” Trey said, in a disgusted tone.

Dante’s lips tightened into a thin white line as he glared down at Trey. “I wasn’t suggesting we discuss business today.” He turned his attention to Sophia. “We can meet next week or the week after.”

Next week or the week after? Wouldn’t he be back in New York by then?

Trey opened his mouth to speak, but Dante held up a hand to silence whatever he’d been about to say. “I’ll be around, so whatever time is convenient for you. And Allen, of course.”

He’d be around? “How long are you planning to stay?”

“I’m relocating to LA.”

Her jaw dropped open and she couldn’t stop the gasp that came out of her mouth. “What?”

His eyes narrowed. “Temporarily. Until we sort out the business.”

Good god, no! Avoiding him when he lived in New York had been difficult enough. If he were there, in LA, she’d have to see him. Every day. A lick of heat raced through her and she had to clamp down hard to stop the excitement dead in its tracks.

She wasn’t interested in Dante Leone.

Not anymore.

No way. No how.

Coming Soon: CHASING SECRETS – Book 3 Forevermore Series

The front door opened. A burst of light blinded him as someone walked in. A woman, judging by the silhouette, carrying something in her right hand.

“Maddie!” Pam squealed.

Wyatt’s heart pounded faster than a freight train traveling at top speed. The door closed, and Maddie Scott-Smith came into focus. He stared. Couldn’t take his eyes off her. If possible, she was more beautiful now than the last time he’d seen her. Tall and slender, with curves in all the right places. Her long wavy brown hair had been cut to shoulder length. He liked the new style. It suited her high cheekbones and heart-shaped face.

A loud squeal sounded. Maddie turned. Her lips curved up. Same smile, too. It could always light up even the gloomiest of days.

“Pam.” Maddie waved with her free hand.

She came to see Pam. He should have figured as much. They’d been best friends since high school. Now that Pam was back in town…His gut twisted. Fool. He should have known. What an idiot he’d been to believe Maddie was different than any of the other females he’d known, other than his family. The sweet, loving woman who’d sworn his scars didn’t matter never really existed. She’d been a figment of his imagination. The real Maddie had latched on to better prospects the moment they’d come along.

Pam rushed over and enveloped Maddie in a big hug. “I’m so glad you made it after all. Oh, look at this little angel. I’m so excited to finally meet him.”

Him. She’d had a son. Bryce Beaumont’s boy. To think he’d almost believed her when she’d come to him and divulged she was pregnant with his child. Like that could ever happen. She was engaged to Bryce, and the sob story about him blackmailing her into it was a load of crap that stunk worse than a skunk. Bryce Beaumont didn’t have to threaten anyone to get them to marry him. Why would he when a parade of women swarmed at his feet? Not to mention the massive trust fund he’d have access to in the near future. Well, at least he’d learned the truth about Maddie before it was too late.

What’s happening… (Contest)
Saturday, May 21st, 2016

I’m writing this late Friday night. A family emergency may be calling me away from my desk tomorrow, so I thought I’d go ahead and knock this out. And because it’s so late, I’m yawning as I’m typing. I guess I shouldn’t say that because it might be like that reflexive yawn—you know, someone yawns, everyone yawns…yawning again.

Anyways, this next week is going to be crazy busy for me. Besides the usual helping out with my dd’s kids, trying to get the green grunge out of the pool, and doing my best to turn my gaze away from my craft table…(yawn)…I’ll be polishing up the last of the Planet Desire trilogy books, aptly named Planet Desire! The plan is to have it done, formatted, and ready for you to download by Friday. That’s the plan anyway.

I’ll also be working on edits for another author and trying to pound out the final three chapters of a new SEAL story. Wish me luck!

I’m pretty sure I have a couple of recent contests still in limbo. If you scroll down this page and find them, it’s not too late to enter! And because you’ve been patient, I’ll offer TWO COMMENTERS a chance to win a download of either Desire’s Prisoner, Desire’s Slave or my latest Cowboy on the Edge story, Cain’s Law.
