Gabbi Grey: When an Angsty Author Tries to Go Rom-Com (Contest)
Thursday, August 11th, 2022

I was approached about contributing to a charity anthology and I wracked my brain for a gay romance story.  A friend had suggested Page Against the Machine as a potential name for a bookstore.  Another friend suggested The Owlโ€™s Nest, and since the randomizer chose that, I was happy to go with it.

Great. I had a name for the bookstore in my fictional town of Mission City, British Columbia.  With Page Against the Machine, I had a title.  I already knew one character who worked at the bookstore โ€” a free-spirited sensitive named Sunshine who was forever getting into everyoneโ€™s business.  I figured her boss would be more of a traditionalist.  Who better than a guy whose parents once owned the store and that heโ€™d inherited?  More back and forth with different friends and I had Dickens.

Now, knowing this was a novella, I wanted a quick meet-cute and a deep dive into the relationship.  How about a motorcycle mechanic who sets up shop next to the bookstore?  Suddenly, Bookstore Dudeโ€™s quiet is disturbed by hot Motorcycle Dude.  So that made them enemies, right? Eventually, I realized I was writing an enemy-to-lovers book that had hate sex in the fourth chapter.

Of course, this being a Gabbi Grey story, I had to throw in some emotional wounds โ€” especially for Spike the Motorcycle Dude.  And Iโ€™m not sure if this is a true rom-com, but itโ€™s as close as Iโ€™ve come thus far in my short writing career.

Naturally, I hope youโ€™ll snag a copy.  In the meantime, share with me your favorite enemy-to-lovers story or a good rom-com I should check out.  $5 Amazon GC to a random commenter.

Page Against the Machine Synopsis

Dickens

My tranquility is shattered when a motorcycle repair shop moves in next to my bookstore. All I want is peace and quiet. What I get is gunning engines and eighties rock music. One of us has got to go, and since I was here first, itโ€™s the hot mechanic.

Spike

I chose Mission City to set up shop because of the weekend-enthusiast riders. Iโ€™ve dreamed of owning my own shop for years, and no one is going to run me out of town. Least of all the adorable geek Bookstore Dude.

This 25k gay romance novella is a true instalove, enemies to lovers, opposites attract story with a cuddly cat named Aristotle. The story first appeared in the anthology Love Is All, Volume 5.

Come on, baby. Break a few rulesโ€ฆ

Snippet from Lawlessโ€ฆ

Ty Nolan ignored the nudge against his shin. Last thing he wanted to do was open his eyes. From the already harsh glare burning behind his eyelids, he knew opening them would be damn painful.

โ€œTy, come on. Wake up,โ€ came a harsh whisper. โ€œSheriffโ€™s here.โ€

Sheriff? What the hell? And what was Tank doing in his bedroom? Another moment passed before he realized his mattress was damn flat. Where the hell was he?

โ€œTy,โ€ came another voice, this one louder and with an irritated edge. โ€œHate to interrupt your beauty sleep, but Iโ€™d like a word.โ€

Fuck, it really was the sheriff. Which answered the question of why his bed was so damn uncomfortable. He peeked in the direction of Sheriff Josh Penskeโ€™s voiceโ€”bars stood between them. Oh hell, Iโ€™m going to hear about it now.

With his head pounding, he accepted Tankโ€™s hand up.

His buddy grinned. โ€œNever knew you were such a lightweight, bro.โ€

Ty grimaced at Tankโ€™s wisecrackโ€”and his crushing grip. Tank was built like aโ€ฆwell, a tank. Ty had played football for the defensive team in high school, so he wasnโ€™t exactly puny. It took a few seconds to stuff his shirt back into his jeans, wincing as his bruised knuckles brushed denim. Before he turned toward Josh, he raked a hand through his hair. Josh stood beside the open cell door, shaking his head.

Good Lord, was he about to lose his job? Be suspended?

Josh turned and led the way down the corridor to the stationโ€™s bullpen door. Ty was glad he was still too hung over to blush as he completed the walk of shame past his fellow deputies, whose mouths were crimped, no doubt to hold back their laughter. Josh led him inside his office then waved him toward the vacant chair in front of his desk.

Ty slumped into the chair. He was going to be fired, he just knew it.

Josh sat back in his chair and turned his chair to the side, his gaze going to the window. โ€œYou know, I thought it was a simple assignment.โ€

โ€œTo be fair, I had the night offโ€”โ€

Josh held up a hand to cut him off. โ€œNo matter whether youโ€™re in uniform or not, your duty is to keep the peace, not start the dang fight.โ€

At this point, Ty knew better than to try to correct Joshโ€™s impression of what had happened the evening before. Heโ€™d only piss him off worse than he already had.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what to do with youโ€ฆโ€

Ty wished heโ€™d framed that statement as a question, because he wouldโ€™ve offered suggestionsโ€”short of firing him, of course. He liked his job.

And he needed it. He needed to succeed if he ever wanted to put in his application to join the Texas Rangers. He sat straighter in his chair. Heโ€™d take his lumps and move on. Figure out what was next in his life. Life after the Army wasnโ€™t turning out to be the cakewalk heโ€™d expected.

โ€œCan you imagine my surprise when the mayor called to inform me that sheโ€™d seen you hauled off in handcuffs, along with a dozen other โ€˜miscreantsโ€™โ€”her word?โ€

The mayor hadnโ€™t been so keen on this weekendโ€™s festivities. Heโ€™d had a birdโ€™s-eye view of just how unhappy she was when sheโ€™d marched into the station the morning before and asked Josh to lock the fairground gates.

Apparently, sheโ€™d changed her mind about allowing bikers to gather there. โ€œYes, I know I approved the clubโ€™s permit, but have you seen how many bikes are parked all up and down Main Street? Caldera will not be another Waco!โ€ sheโ€™d said, tapping her foot.

Ty had grimaced at the mention of the infamous shootout between members of two rival motorcycle clubs, that had spilled out into a restaurant parking lot where cops had violently ended that shit. Tyโ€™s Veterans Posse Club wasnโ€™t like that. Not involved with drugs or criminal activities. Opposed to violence, they did however get pissy about disrespect from any other club. Composed entirely of former vets, the club gave its members a safe place to be, with people who had shared similar experiences that most folks couldnโ€™t empathize with or even conceive of.

What had happened last night at Rubyโ€™s Roadhouse had beenโ€ฆhis fault. One too many beers and a sneering, snide comment from another clubโ€™s snarky member, who shouldnโ€™t have been there in the first place, and heโ€™d waded right into a fight.

โ€œLook, I got the down-low from Ruby at the bar,โ€ Josh said. โ€œShe said that guy from the club was being a dick to one of the waitresses, and that when you approached him, he insulted your clubโ€ฆโ€

Ty opened his mouth, but Josh gave a curt shake of his head, again cutting him off.

โ€œRuby Tackettโ€™s bar got trashed. I asked her what she wanted to have happen.โ€

Here goesโ€ฆ Ruby was a hardass. Sheโ€™d turned off the jukebox to read the riot act to all the bikers whoโ€™d filled her bar last nightโ€”before shit had gone down. โ€œNo fights,โ€ sheโ€™d said, her arms crossed over her ample bosom. โ€œNo hassling my girls. When I say youโ€™re cut off, youโ€™re cut off. No fights! Got it?โ€

He and his buddies had all grinned and nodded. โ€œYes, maโ€™am,โ€ theyโ€™d answered.

And still, all hell had broken loose.

โ€œShe expects your club to clean up the mess.โ€

Ty nodded. โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s closing the bar for the duration of the convention. But she already has a booth set up at the fairgrounds where sheโ€™ll be serving beer in the campground areaโ€”to keep the visitors off the road and out of her place. She wants you behind the bar with her.โ€

Natasha Moore: Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner (Contest)

UPDATE: The winner isโ€ฆColleen C!
*~*~*

โ€œDonโ€™t bet on it.โ€

โ€œAce in the hole.โ€

โ€œPut your money where your mouth is.โ€

Iโ€™m not a gambler. Not at all. In fact, my adult daughter took me to a casino for the first time only a few weeks ago. And while I had a fun afternoon with her, I donโ€™t feel the need to do it again unless itโ€™s simply to spend more time with her. I was not drawn into the flashing lights and promises of big payouts. I had more fun watching the other people. Yep, not a gambler.

But when I was working on my last book, NOT BETTING ON FOREVER, which releases today, Aug 8th, I researched betting lingo so I could add a few phrases here and there. The main characters, Melanie and Nick, grew up next door to each other in very competitive families, so when they both end up back in town, single and next door to each other again, what can they do but fall into old habits? They donโ€™t go to a casino but find themselves competitors in the local Battle of the Businesses.

I was surprised how many common terms and phrases come from betting lingo. I mean, I guess most of them are pretty obvious when you get right down to it. But when a non-competitive, non-gambler like me uses some of these phrases in non-betting conversationsโ€ฆwell, as someone who loves words, it made me curious about which phrases Iโ€™ve been using without having a clue where they originated. Just a few examplesโ€ฆ

โ€œHolding your own.โ€ I always thought that meant you could handle yourself in a certain situation, but in betting lingo, it means breaking even โ€” like what I did after 5 hours in the casino with my daughter.

โ€œSure thing.โ€ Now to me, itโ€™s another way to say โ€œyes.โ€ โ€œHey, can you pick up the pizza on your way home?โ€ โ€œSure thing.โ€ But in betting lingo it meansโ€ฆyeah, pretty obviousโ€ฆsomething that has 100% chance of winning. Kinda the opposite of a โ€œLong shot.โ€

โ€œDown to the wire.โ€ Thatโ€™s a phrase that now means up to the very last moment, like when Iโ€™m working right up until my deadline to finish a project. Luckily, that doesnโ€™t happen very often! But in betting terms, it comes from a time when a wire was stretched across the finish line in horse races as a way to tell which horse won when the competition was very close. Sounds kind of dangerous to me.

You might wonder which terms my characters used in NOT BETTING ON FOREVER? Just a few examplesโ€ฆ

โ€œWhat do you want to bet?โ€ That was only a few pages into the book. They canโ€™t help it!

โ€œPenny ante.โ€ It used to be a small-stakes poker game. The definition now means any dealings on a small scale. Nick and Melanieโ€™s parents usually play for pennies, big jars of them.

โ€œLuck of the draw.โ€ Melanieโ€™s team is put up against a tough competitor in one of the battles, Iโ€™m not going to tell you who won.

โ€œYouโ€™ve got a bet.โ€ Nick and Melanie made a side bet. Umโ€ฆmore than one, actually.

The examples Iโ€™ve given are just the tip of the iceberg. So, what about you? Any favorite betting phrases? Do you like to hit the casinos? Do you weigh the odds? Play your cards right? Or are the cards stacked against you? Let me know in the comments below and one lucky commenter will get a free digital copy of NOT BETTING ON FOREVER.

Not Betting on Forever

Whatโ€™s the fun when you donโ€™t bet to win?

Single mom Melanie Hayes should absolutely, completely, and totally not be attracted to her next door neighbor. Nick Campagna can be her friend, her secret crush, or just the arrogant โ€”and unavoidably handsomeโ€”jerk next door, but nothing more.  Because, even though it was a million years ago, heโ€™s also her sisterโ€™s ex. And now, with Lakesideโ€™s Battle of the Businesses in full swing, Nickโ€™s also Melanieโ€™s competition.

Their families have always been competitive, so itโ€™s no surprise to anyone that Nick and Melanie are playing for more than just bragging rights. With a coveted piece of land on the line, Nick isnโ€™t backing down. Maybe he canโ€™t help noticing that the tomboy he knew as a kid has turned into a stunning redhead. Maybe he is attracted to Melanie. Ridiculously so. But as real as this feels, Nick knows this is one game he definitely canโ€™t win.

Theyโ€™ve known each other long enough that itโ€™s definitely not love at first sight. But attraction can happen in an instant. And this is one wager where winning is nowhere near as fun as playing the gameโ€ฆ

Oh, and the title phrase โ€“ โ€œWinner, winner, chicken dinner?โ€ Itโ€™s said that it originated from gamblers who would bet anything to win enough money to buy themselves a chicken dinner.

Diana Cosby: Natureโ€™s Beauty โ€“ Summer Along the Shore! (Contest)
Sunday, August 7th, 2022

UPDATE: The winner isโ€ฆJanelle Beaver!

ยฉDiana Cosby 2022

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy natureโ€™s beauty.  Recently, I was fortunate to see this beautiful doe.

The long days of sunlight nurture numerous flowers that draw bees, butterflies, skippers, and more.

Early in the morning chipmunks move through the grass, around rocks, or through the woods foraging for food.

Ravens are beautiful, plus really smart, and I often see them during the summer months.

I love turtles and I look forward to seeing them in the woods, at the pond, or along the shore before the cooler weather of fall arrives and they hibernate.

The warm days of summer give way to numerous varieties of butterflies who slowly flutter their way across fields, streams, in search of the next flower.  Take care, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the summer!

โ€œWill you. Wonโ€™t you. Will you. Wonโ€™t you. Will you join the dance?โ€
~Lewis Carroll

I think about this quote when the 8-year-old and I are in the pool. She loves to use the time to be โ€œcreative.โ€ She sings Disney and BTS songs while acting them out. She does what she calls โ€œsplash dance,โ€ which is her splashing water with her hands while she sings. Sometimes, she makes me guess the song while she splashes in a rhythm, and of course, I canโ€™t guess, so I give her the most ridiculous answers I can. I love to watch her eyes roll. When she joins her hands with mine and tries to dance or do some synchronized swimming routine that she has in her head, I get twisted up like a pretzel. Itโ€™s magic, of course.

No, we donโ€™t look like this, but her expressions are just as fierce! LOL

I will hate the summer she decides playing with Nina is no longer fun. Heck, I was crushed when the three older kids got to the point where they werenโ€™t dying to hit the pool every day. When she โ€œoutgrowsโ€ me, Iโ€™ll be the only โ€œkidโ€ out there, trying to come up with my own synchronized swimming routine. More like, Iโ€™ll add some water-aerobic exercises to my daily dozen. sigh

So, tell me what keeps you young at heart? Do you play with the kids/grandkids? Do you swim like an eel in the lake or pool? Do you swing on a hammock or practice aeromancy (cloud divination) or stare at the stars at night and imagine all the billions of strange worlds out there and what it would be like to visit them?
