The Old West is full of true stories of bandits, shootouts, and lost treasures. Many people attempt to divide historical figures into heroes and villains, lawman and outlaws. In reality, most people are more complex than that, and few famous people from the Old West led blameless lives.
Wyatt Earp is often regarded as a heroic lawman. However, he spent only six years in law enforcement. He also worked as a gambler, buffalo hunter, stagecoach guard, and Teamster, among other jobs. He was arrested for stealing a horse, but he escaped from jail.
Like many famous Western figures, Wyatt Earp wound up in the famous town of Tombstone, Arizona. Wyatt Earp and Ike Clanton allied to find a group of cowboys who had robbed a stagecoach, but the alliance fell apart—possibly because the Clantons were involved in the robberies. This led to the famous shootout at the OK Corral and the deaths of Billy Clanton and the two McLaury brothers, known cattle rustlers. Soon after, Wyatt’s brother Virgil was seriously wounded in a shooting, and their brother Morgan was killed in a shootout. The attackers were unknown, but Wyatt and his gang killed several suspects. He fled town to avoid prosecution.
Many movies have been made featuring Wyatt Earp, most of them romanticizing his life. The truth is more complex.
A Deadly Killer
Curly Bill Brosius, on the other hand, was pure outlaw and a close friend of the Clantons. He was supposedly a crack shot who could hit running jackrabbits and shoot out candle flames without breaking the candles. His idea of a practical joke was to make a preacher dance during a sermon by shooting at his feet. He forced Mexicans at a community dance to take off their clothes and dance naked. He killed at least one man in a robbery, escaped from prison, and led a gang of rustlers in Arizona Territory.
In 1880, in Tombstone, Curly Bill killed popular Marshal Fred White. The Marshal was trying to take Bill’s gun and it went off, hitting White in the groin. Wyatt Earp then knocked Bill unconscious with his gun. White said he didn’t think Curly Bill was trying to kill him, but he died from his wound the next day. Curly Bill was also implicated in some revenge killings and at least one death during a bar fight. He was implicated in the murder of Morgan Earp, but without proof he wasn’t charged.
Violence in the Desert
Curly Bill also might have been involved in the Skeleton Canyon Massacre. Here history and legend get muddled. Some people claim that Mexican bandits looted Monterrey, Mexico, and escaped across the border with a treasure worth $75,000, or $2 million, or $8 million. Others claim there is no evidence of such a heist in Monterrey, and that it’s doubtful such a treasure ever existed in the first place.
Regardless, violence came to Skeleton Canyon, a shallow canyon in southeastern Arizona, not far from the Mexico border. An American gang ambushed a group of Mexicans—possibly the bandits, or else merely vaqueros (cowboys). One story says Curly Bill’s gang shot the Mexicans out of their saddles, which caused their mules to stampede. The bandits then shot the mules to keep them from running away with the treasure, but with the mules dead, the men had no way to transport the loot. Two men from the gang, Zwing Hunt and Billy Grounds, hid the treasure somewhere in the canyon. When they were killed, the location of the hidden treasure was lost.
Curly Bill had been wounded six weeks before the Skeleton Canyon Massacre and was supposedly still recovering. Was he involved or not? Was the violence over a treasure that would be worth millions today, or merely over some cattle? The debates continue, and some people still hunt for the treasure.
What is most likely true, but is still challenged by some people, is that Wyatt Earp killed Curly Bill in a shootout in 1882. Bill was in his thirties, which considering his lifestyle was a surprisingly long life.
Unsolved Mysteries took a look at the Skeleton Canyon Treasure.
Tombstone is now a popular place for tourists to visit.
History (and Legend) As Inspiration
My adventure novel, The Skeleton Canyon Treasure, was inspired by the legendary treasure. In the novel, set today, Camie and Ryan are hunting for Ryan’s uncle, who disappeared while hunting for the historical treasure. The clues take Camie, Ryan, and the feisty cat Tiger on a trail through the Southwest. Their quest takes them to historic sites such as Tombstone and eventually into the remote canyon, where danger awaits.
“The Skeleton Canyon Treasure is a light, breezy action/adventure/romance that’s perfect for summer reading.”
If you love suspense and romance, try this gripping adventure!
The Mad Monk’s Treasure is the first of the Southwest Treasure Hunters novels. The Dead Man’s Treasure is book 2 and The Skeleton Canyon Treasure is book 3. Each novel stands alone and is complete, with no cliffhangers. This series mixes action and adventure with light romance. The stories explore the Southwest, especially New Mexico.
The Mad Monk’s Treasure, “Smart romance with an ‘Indiana Jones’ feel,” is currently free at all e-book retailers.
What is your favorite historical era to read about or explore? Does visiting the real location today help you picture the past?

When I consider writing a new romance series, I first look at what will make the stories different. What kernel of an idea sets it apart from other stories? I realized I wanted a series about how important women are to women. No matter how much we might enjoy the men in our lives. Women connect to other women in a unique way. Maybe, because we think alike or can share emotions men can’t understand, but women need women.
So then I asked, what type of situation would force four women together emotionally?
Okay, four women all lose their husbands at one time in a car accident. These women are connected only by their husbands’ jobs. They know each other, but are not what you’d call close—until their husbands are killed. This forever alters their world. Each has their unique problem.
Jen Larson is a realtor, who has for years lived as a married single. Her husband, Craig was her college sweetheart. She believes they had a good life, but less than a year after losing him, she’s ready to start dating again. This throws her relationship with the other executives’ wives into a tailspin. They don’t understand how she can do this, which makes for the first book in the series, The Marketing Exec’s Widow.
The truly fun part about a series like this is no one book is about only one woman. Each plays a part in the other book. Their stories continue and you learn more about what each woman is facing in her life. The happy-ever-after continues, and the reader learns how these women have grown to depend on each other.
In the second book, IT Exec’s Baby, the reader already knows from the first book that Brie Sullivan is pregnant. She has had the baby and is facing the challenges of dealing with a newborn as well as postpartum depression. She also has two other children she’s trying to raise alone. Life for her is not going well, and she’s searching for answers. During one of her more trying moments, she believes she has the answer and asks Jason Clark to marry her. He’s the son of one of the other executives’ wives, Marianne Clark. This is the beginning of their journey to finding happiness.
Book three, CFO’s Affair is about Sylvia Donovan. The reader finds outs in book one that Sylvia’s husband, Bob asked her for a divorce on the morning he left on the business trip in which he died. Sylvia is going through a difficult time with her daughter having just left for college. She’s suffering from empty nest syndrome. She needs a diversion from her loneliness and decides to help at the company where her husband once worked. This sets her on the trail of finding answers as to why her husband asked for a divorce. She discovers her husband had an affair, and his son is in an abusive situation. This rocks her world and forces her to make some very hard decision about not only her future, but also the future of her husband’s son.
The last book in the series, CFO’s Widow has not been released. Still working on this one, Marianne Clark is the oldest of the four women. She loved her husband and has done her best to deal with the massive hole his death has caused in her life. She is ready to give love a chance when she discovers a lump in her breast. Faced with her mortality, she has to make the hard decision of letting a man into her life or building a wall around herself. Shouldn’t she know the outcome before allowing a man she cares about into her life?
All of these books deal with major women issues. They show not only what women can endure during different phases of their lives, but how the relationship with not only men, but also women, help them deal with the problems they face.
Here are the blurbs for all the books…

Yes, Friends, here’s a full-length novel FREE to newsletter subscribers and certain other special friends (see details below!). This time around, Delilah fans are very special! Jump into another world and another time as you meet Caerwin and the man who will destroy her life.
We’ve all met men like that, haven’t we?
Caerwin of the Cornovii, a young woman with a promising life ahead. How could she anticipate the horrors about to unfold? Nothing in her experience prepared her for the Roman Army or this commander who would make her his sex slave. Yet between her hatred for him and his deliberate conquest of her body, a strangely luminous emotion takes fragile life between them.
Here’s a scene from the book Caerwin and the Roman Dog. Warning: this exchange is non-consensual.
Her wrists chafed raw at the bindings. Shadows grew dark on the forested hillside and frogs sang in the marshes. Overhead, cloud bands took on the late gold and crimson of sunset. Thin columns of smoke rose from campfires and the smell of roasting meat sent gnawing pangs to her stomach. Chills gripped her body and her teeth chattered in the spring cold.
“Have you tired sufficiently that I dare bring you inside?”
She startled at his voice. He had bathed and wore a long draped garment with a broad red band around its hem. He stood with hands on his hips, watching her. She turned her face away, afraid to speak.
“I asked you a question,” he said, wrenching her head back by her hair and holding her face toward him. “And I expect a respectful answer.”
“You will have no respect from me,” she said, her lips moving stiffly in the cold. “I will kill you at my first chance.”
He gripped her hair tighter forcing tears to her eyes. “Antius,” he shouted. “Come.”
An older man with dark eyes and an oversized nose emerged from the tent. Gripping her arms on both sides, they brought her inside. Warmth from a charcoal-heaped brazier filled the interior. A narrow sleeping platform occupied the far corner, while a small table with chair sat near the entry. Oil lamps flickered and a heady scent wafted through the air.
She stumbled forward as the men dragged her to the center post where her wrists were briefly untied. Her ripped dress was removed and her upper arms and ankles then tied loosely to the post behind her.
“Bathe her,” the tall man said with a wave of his hand. “She stinks of her kind.”
Antius hurried to fill a pan with warmed water and set it near her feet. With a sponge, he scrubbed her face and neck then proceeded down her arms and legs. The warm water soothed at first but then the scratches burned and chills swept over her as air hit her wet skin. Her teeth chattered loudly.
“A drink, Antius. Give her warmed wine.”
The cup rattled against her teeth as the wine came to her mouth. She clenched her teeth with no intention of drinking, but on the man’s order, Antius held her head back by her long braids and poured the sweet wine through her lips. Some of it escaped to trickle down her neck, but more of it filled her throat with acidic warmth. When the goblet emptied, Antius returned to the bathing.
Humiliation consumed her as the sponge scoured every inch of her flesh. Once the bathing had finished, the squat dark-haired man scrubbed her with a dry cloth until her skin heated. He then applied herb-scented oil. She stood naked and gleaming in the lamp light as the tall man came to inspect her.
“My name is Marcellus,” he said. “I am your master. You will learn to do as I say, or you will die.”
“I wish to die,” she said hoarsely. Her tongue felt thick. The day had lasted an eternity and the shock of its events had hardly begun to settle in her. The wine hit her empty stomach and spread dizziness across her forehead.
He waved his hand dismissively. “Easy to say. But death doesn’t come quickly to women in our camp, not to one such as you. Without me, you would wish to die many times before your last breath.”
His touch spared no part of her as he examined his trophy. How many war trophies had he already captured? Surely the Romans took what they pleased. Virico had spoken often of the intelligences carried from other tribes, how the Romans swarmed like a plague of insects covering the land, how bargaining for life came with terrible sacrifice of freedom and hard-won goods. She would not bargain.
She bit her tongue against another remark as Marcellus’ hands cupped her breasts then her buttocks. Her eyes dipped in the effects of the wine and her warming after so long in the cold. He took his time touching her, one hand now between her legs as he fondled her most private parts with studied concentration. A particular spot captured his attention. He stroked her there, inciting tremors in her legs.
“Ah, she is a woman, Antius,” he said with a laugh. “I will tame you,” he said, leaning his face close to hers as his fingers continued a wretched play. “You will cry out on the end of my prick, and joyfully.”

Summer’s here and things get busy and sometimes with vacation and spending time with family… things can get away from us. So I’m on vacation in beautiful Mt. Tremblant with my husband, sons, and a couple of friends, and I realize that the blog post I was to do for Delilah’s blog is this week, NOT next week. Oops!
Well, you’re probably as busy as I am, so I figure you’ll be happy with short, right? So here’s an excerpt from Heat, which came out yesterday. Enjoy!
HEAT
With passion so blazing hot, you don’t want to put this fire out…
When Rikki’s first love dies in the line of duty she vows to keep her heart guarded and never give it away again.
After moving to a new town for a fresh start, she is given the opportunity to show off her photography skills and shoot a sexy fireman calendar. Although taking the job might bring up painful memories, she knows this is her best chance at fulfilling her dreams of becoming a professional photographer.
While out with her new roommates, Rikki meets Simon and Carter and feels an instant spark of attraction… to both equally gorgeous and tempting men. This is the same intense feeling she had the first time she fell in love. But how can she feel that way about two men?
When she arrives at the firehouse to shoot the calendar, she is surprised to find that Simon and Carter are firefighters so she immediately pulls back on their growing flirtation. But Simon and Carter are men who know what they want, and they want Riki. As the chemistry between them ignites Rikki finds it hard to resist falling prey to her steamiest fantasies.
Now she has to choose between keeping her heart safe… or taking a chance on love… and possibly losing everything.
* * *
Excerpt:
“From the two gentlemen at the bar. They said to say welcome to Muldone.”
Rikki’s gaze shot to the bar, and the man she’d been gazing at before smiled and nodded. Then she glanced at the man next to him and—
It was like a punch to the gut. That same intense feeling as she’d had when she’d seen the first man. That this was the man she was meant to be with.
This guy had the same type of physique as the first. Tall, muscular. Very strong. His hair was a soft brown, and wavy. She imagined it would feel soft to the touch. And his eyes seemed very warm.
His gaze shifted from his friend’s to hers for the first time and—Wham! Instant electricity.
Oh, God, how could she have the same feeling—this very special and intense intuitive feeling—for two men?
Of course, she couldn’t. She was just reading things wrong.
The two men stood up and started to walk her way. Her heart fluttered, then started pounding faster as they approached the table.
“Hello. My name is Simon,” the first man said. “And this is my friend, Carter.”
“Hi,” Carter said.
Simon held out his hand and she shook it. At the first touch, sparks flared through her body, playing havoc with her senses. Then she shook Carter’s hand, and had the same wild reaction.
“Hi, uh . . . I’m Rikki.”
“May we join you?” Carter asked.
Ordinarily, she would make some excuse to send them away, but she was too befuddled and found herself nodding.
“I . . . uh . . . thanks for the drink.”
Simon smiled. “Our pleasure.”
“How did you know I just moved to town?”
Carter laughed. “Rhonda on the bar knows her clientele. She told us.”
Rikki nodded and took a sip of the icy drink, and the sweet flavor of peaches exploded on her tongue.
“It’s delicious.”
“So did your party break up,” Simon asked, “or will the others be coming back?”
“I’m not really sure. I’m not used to coming to places like this, but I think they might have moved on.” She could see Tina sitting at another table, and Mel leaning in close to the woman he was talking to at her table.
“So the guy just ditched you?” Simon asked.
She shrugged. “He’s not my boyfriend or anything. In fact, I barely know him. We just live together.”
At Simon’s arched eyebrow, she added, “He’s my new roommate. All three of them are. But I just met them when I moved in a few days ago.”
“Well, since they’ve moved on, do you want to go somewhere quieter where we can talk?” Carter asked.
Anxiety quivered through her. These guys were definitely moving faster than she liked.
“Don’t look so panicky,” Carter said. “I just mean we could move to a booth on the back wall. With the overhang, it’s quieter and we won’t have to fight with the music to hear each other.”
“Oh.” She glanced to the wall and saw a few booths were open. “That would be okay.”
She stood up and grabbed her purse and her gift from Anna. Simon picked up her drink and he and Carter followed her to one of the booths. As soon as she sat down, she noticed the difference in noise level.
“You’re right, this is better,” she said.
The two men sat across from her in the rectangular booth.
“I’ll just let my friends know where I am.” She grabbed her phone and texted Tina.
Way to go, Tina texted back with a winky face.
“So where did you move here from?” Carter asked.
“I was in Ashton. That’s the small town in Ohio where I grew up. But I got laid off from work and so I decided to start again someplace new.”
“And you came here because of the great scenery?” Simon asked.
“It is a beautiful spot. I hadn’t realized how pretty it was here or how much of a tourist destination it is. I came here because a close friend from college lives here and I thought it would be fun if we lived in the same place again.”
“Friends are important.” Carter’s smile caused his eyes to twinkle.
“You two are good friends I take it,” she observed.
“That’s the truth,” Simon said.
“Yeah. We share everything.”
The glitter in Carter’s eyes sent a shiver of excitement through her. As if he’d just told her that he and Simon both wanted to be with her. To kiss her . . . undress her . . . make love to her. Together.
Oh, God, the thought of being with one of these big, muscular men was enough to steal her breath away. But the thought of being with both of them . . .
Of course, she was just being silly. Because of the weirdness of her intuitive feeling that she was meant to be with Simon. And with Carter. She was misinterpreting things. They probably shared an apartment and maybe a car and . . . whatever else guys shared on a regular basis.
Not women.
Not her.

Hi! I’m Opal Carew and I’m pleased to be back as a guest blogger. Thank you to Delilah for inviting me!
I want to tell you about something totally new that I’m trying. I got the idea from listening to the sexy narrator I’m using for the audiobooks for my Mastered By series.
When I listened to his smooth, sexy voice as he brought my hero to life during a love scene, I thought about how erotic it would be to listen to him talking to me. Telling me what he’d like to do to me. What he’d like me to do to him.
Just a pure erotic flight of fancy, right?
But then I thought, what if a woman who was terrified of men because of a past sexual trauma found an audio like that, with a voice that portrayed a man who was caring and tender, but down and dirty, too?
What if that audio helped her find sexual release in a way that made her feel safe, because he was a fantasy lover who could never hurt her? What if that escape helped her cope with the fear that had settled deep into her soul?
Then what if she met her new neighbor and… it’s his voice?
That inspired me to write my new series, Dirty Talk. Each part has an erotic audio like I just described.
Here’s the description of the first story.
Secret Pleasure is the first exciting episode in Opal Carew’s Dirty Talk series, a poignant erotic romance about a woman struggling with her sexuality because of a devastating trauma from her past, and the strong, sensitive man who helps her find her way. If you love bad-assed alpha heroes with a strong, protective streak then you’ll love Dirty Talk!
I was a little worried how readers would react to the idea. Mostly I was afraid the audios might be a little over the top erotic, but people seem to love them!
Reviews

The Dirty Talk books have taken a lot more time and work than others because of writing and producing the audios, including editing them and integrating them into the stories, on top of the usual production issues. But it was worth it. I think the audios are quite unique… and very, very hot!
I’ve loved working on this series. I love Tal and how sweet and protective he is of Sonny. He’s the kind of hero I truly adore! And I absolutely love how my narrator, William, has brought Tal to life in the audios!
The series is actually a novel in four parts, but all four are available as of next Tuesday (May 23rd).
Sonny has a debilitating fear of men. Tal is a scary looking tattooed bad-ass. Can Tal get Sonny past her fear and help her become whole?
Sonny longs to feel the intimate touch of a man. But she is haunted by a past trauma that leaves her terrified of being with a man. Even when she dreams of being in a man’s arms, the steamy sexual situation turns into a nightmare.
Sonny has found one way to cope. A stranger’s voice has been her salvation.
Tal wants a woman to love him. To have a real, long-lasting relationship. But most women are intimidated by his bad-ass appearance, with his tattoos, piercings, and broad, muscular frame.
Tal looks the way he does because of a past fraught with pain. The tattoos aren’t going anywhere, so he needs to find a woman who will accept him for who he is… and was.
When Tal sees Sonny, he senses in her a kindred spirit. The haunting pain in her eyes draws him, but he flinches every time fear flickers across her face when she sees him.
Can Tal find a way to break through Sonny’s barriers and start something that might heal them both?
Secret Pleasure is the first exciting episode in Opal Carew’s Dirty Talk series, a poignant erotic romance about a woman struggling with her sexuality because of a devastating trauma from her past, and the strong, sensitive man who helps her find her way. If you love bad-assed alpha heroes with a strong, protective streak then you’ll love Dirty Talk!

About Opal:
As a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of erotic contemporary romance, Opal Carew writes about passion, love, and taking risks. Her heroines follow their hearts and push past the fear that stops them from realizing their dreams… to the excitement and love of happily-ever-after.
Opal loves nail polish, cats, old movies, crystals, dragons, feathers, pink hair, the occult, Manga artwork, Zentangle, and all that glitters. She earned a degree in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo, and spent 15 years as a software analyst before turning to her passion as a writer. She grew up in Toronto, and now lives in Ottawa with her husband, huge nail polish collection, and five cats. One of her sons just finished his second Masters degree in Geopolitics (first at Sussex University in the UK and second at Carleton University in Ottawa.) The other son has an undergraduate degree from Carleton University and is now working at Apple. Yes, mom is proud!

Today, let’s take a moment and introduce you to an author you’ve probably never heard of: Grace Risata… (In the interest of honesty, I interviewed myself for Delilah’s blog…yes, I usually talk to myself, so I figured why not go full on ‘crazy’ and do a complete interview!)
ME: Hello. How are you today?
Myself: I’m fine! Thanks for having me. What would you like to know?
ME: Tell the readers of Delilah’s blog a little bit about yourself. All they know so far is that you’re a little strange.
Myself: I prefer the term ‘eccentric’ because it sounds a little bit more sophisticated. Well, I’m a new author who published three books in 2016 and I’m actually publishing my newest release, “My Dirty Vacation” in a few weeks.
ME: Sounds good. What kind of books do you write?
Myself: I specialize in contemporary romance, heavy on the comedy aspect and VERY heavy on the steam. I like realistic situations so the reader can envision herself as the main character. I love alpha males, sexy bedroom scenes (I have a tendency to involve food in some of my intimate scenarios), and lots of humor. You will ALWAYS find a Happily Ever After in my full length novels.
ME: What don’t you like in books?
Myself: I hate cheating, love triangles, secret billionaires, and heroines who make poor choices.
ME: Why don’t you tell us about one of your books, please.
Myself: I’d be happy to! My best-selling book is called MOWED. It’s a very steamy humorous erotic romance. Here is the synopsis:
Curvy girl Pepper is accustomed to flying under everyone’s radar. Being a big girl hasn’t led to many dates or exciting adventures. All of that was about to change.
Through the small-town rumor mill, Pepper learns her old teenage crush just moved back to town. Jason was the star quarterback, prom king, and also Pepper’s neighbor from across the street.
One day he sees Pepper out mowing the lawn and makes her an offer of no-strings attached, no-holds barred sex that has the potential to benefit them both.
Nothing quite turns out the way either of them thought it would.
Click to look inside and find out what happens when the simple act of mowing the lawn turns into so much more…
WARNING: This story contains a plentiful amount of graphic sex scenes (over EIGHT of them…yes, I counted…including ones involving Barbeque Sauce, Pirates, Ice Cubes, and Handcuffs). They are all M/F and absolutely consensual. If you’re looking for a sick, twisted, dark tale – please go elsewhere, you will NOT find it here. All my stories come with a guarantee that you will crack a smile, find a happily-ever-after ending, and never have to deal with an annoying cliffhanger. There’s also no cheating, no love triangles, no unicorns, and no murder.
If I’ve grabbed your attention, I would like to let you know that it’s on sale for only 99 cents on Amazon. Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Mowed-Erotic-Beautiful-Comedy-Romance-ebook/dp/B01M1FJ7IL
ME: Thanks for being here, Grace, and good luck with your writing career. One last thing…where can we find you online? Got any social media links?
Myself: Yes, I do. Thanks for asking! You can “follow” my blog (The icon in the right corner of the website) and get exclusive access to new releases and Advanced Reader Copies. I also post random tidbits about what’s going on in my life. You’ll find posts about recipes gone wrong, product tests gone wrong, and vacations gone wrong. Yes, I’m a magnet for a trouble. However, it sure makes for entertaining stories!
