*~*~*

Silver SoldiersSilver Solders: A Boys Behaving Badly Anthology will release late tonight after midnight, so I thought it might be fun to play a game. I do love puzzles! And this one was so much fun coming up with one word to describe a particular story. Okay, three stories shared the same clue, but that’s okay. I didn’t want you searching forever. No, I want you to be intrigued and decide that Silver Soldiers is a book you can’t ignore.

So, solve the puzzle. Then let me know if any of the word clues I used in the puzzle made you wonder what the story could possibly be about. Comment below for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card!

My SIL had a nice long vacation from work with the PD, but today’s his first day back to work. Did he and my daughter go anywhere? Only to the local hardware and feed store. They spent his vacation doing “projects”—all those things around a small farm that have to be taken care of, and some household things as well. He was certainly busy. He built the nesting boxes for the chickens, cleaned out garden beds, and built a shelf into the wall of one of the bathrooms. It’s a very clever design btw. A leak occurred in the space behind the shower wall, which he’d previously had to fix by removing drywall. He built the shelf so it can slide out if that ever occurs again. And it’s pretty! He accomplished so many tasks it’s impossible to list them all. He and my dd were busy, busy. And surprisingly, they both enjoyed the work and the time together very much.

They’ve adapted well to rural life with our menagerie of animals that grew again when we worried that the single duck my step-grandson showed up with would be lonely when its big enough to put into the small pond. So, back to the feed store and six baby ducks later…

I’m trying to count how many animals we have: 1 ancient (35-years-old) horse, 3 goats, 8 dogs, 4 cats, 1 rabbit, 21 chickens, 7 ducks, 3 guinea hens. They’re steering clear of pigs and cows because they know they’d just get attached, and the animals would have a forever home.

Kelly wouldn’t grow a vegetable garden because she’s so busy with the animals, but she bought herbs to grow for the chickens. Yup.

Anyways, today’s puzzle picture is a shot she took of Kimi the goat. I swear it looks like a glamour shot. Solve the puzzle, then tell me what your “special projects” list might look like if you got ambitious for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! (and Open Contests!)
Friday, May 5th, 2023

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated even in my little southern town! It’s mostly restaurants putting up the banners, but this year, we also have a little pop-up fair! It’s only going to become a bigger deal as more Latinx folks move in, and I can’t wait for it! I used to live in San Antonio, Texas, and it’s HUGE there!

Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day (that’s September 16th). It celebrates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla in 1862, which occurred on — May 5th! It wasn’t the final battle of their war with France, but it has significance because they won against a much larger, occupying force. That’s the history lesson, and when someone asks you what Cinco de Mayo is all about, you can tell them something other than “It’s a big party!”

So, are you planning to do anything to celebrate or enjoy the holiday? Maybe pick up some Mexican food to support the local businesses? Is it a big deal where you live?

*~*~*

With less than a month left of school for the kids, we’re already planning how to spend our summer.

It gets hot in Arkansas. I mean, fry-an-egg-on-the-driveway hot. So, finding things we can do comfortably in the heat is a challenge. When the full heat arrives, we swim in the morning and sometimes at night with the tiki torches burning. We set up an outdoor projector to shine against the pale siding of the chicken coop, bring out the lounge chairs, and watch movies under the stars. The bats come out at night to keep the mosquitoes at bay. No kidding. They’re fun to watch, too.

Things like playing soccer or hiking have to be done early in the day. Things we can do indoors, like flea marketing, are musts.

I’ve made a list of things we’re planning. Perhaps you can add some ideas of your own! Let me know if any of mine appeal!

10 things I’d rather be doing… (Contest)
Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023

UPDATE: The winner is…Jeanette Whetzel!
*~*~*

Here’s a little list of 10 things I’d rather be doing today, listed in no particular order…

  • 🎨 Painting!!
  • 🏊‍♀️ Swimming
  • 📚 Reading a naughty book
  • 🛍️ Shopping at the flea market
  • 🍦 Eating an ice cream cone
  • 🚶‍♀️ Walking a short trail
  • 🦶 Cutting my toenails
  • 🪒 Shaving my legs (although I barely have any leg hair!)
  • 😾 Giving my cat a bath
  • 📿 Unknotting a tangled necklace chain

Okay, so the first six are positive things. The last four are snarky. The point is, I don’t want to work today. Again. But I have to. Bleh.

You know what’s coming next! 😈

Tuesday’s a hard starter!
Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023

Psst! Just a quick reminder that there are contests ongoing over on the Delilah’s Collections website!

This Tuesday was a hard starter. (Is that even grammatically, correct? I don’t care!) I soooo wanted to stay in bed. My daughter even encouraged me last night to sleep in. She was up bright and early and already had the girls’ lunches packed (that’s my job!). I wasn’t needed. However, there are only so many hours I can lie in bed before … 1) I have to pee, 2) no position —back or sides (never on my tummy)— feels comfortable, and 3) I have to see everyone.

Besides, I have a very full day ahead of me, and if I don’t start early, I won’t finish! My To Do list for today is 18 items long. That sounds nuts, but I put even little things on it, like watering plants, so I don’t forget…because I do. I’m a lister. Always have been, and you’ll know I’m not well if I don’t have one sitting in the middle of my desk. I list what’s important (writing goals, edit goals), then put things in between those that make me get up and move around (like watering those pesky plants, cleaning Loki’s fish tank, or sweeping around the bunny’s cage).

No contest, no game today. I have to start work now! But remember, there are open contests you can find by scrolling down my blog page or following the link to the Collections site, so be sure to go play! If you want, give me a kick in the butt to get going—some encouragement. I’m already thinking I need a nap.
